Brussels, 08/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the Commission and Brazil singed a trade agreement (Memorandum of Understanding) which mutually facilitates guaranteed access to each others' markets and textile products. This agreement must still be formally approved by the Council in October and which will be applied at the beginning of November or at the end of 2002 at the latest. It aims to: suspend quotas imposed by the EU on up to ten categories of textile products exported by Brazil; 2) Brazil's commitment to not exceed maximum prices for the textile and clothes sector and get rid of an additional tax of 1.5% at the end of 2002; 3) The commitment of the two parties to not impose non-tariff measures on their textile and clothing exports and to rapidly reach an elimination of customs duties on these products in the framework of EU-Mercosur negotiations.
