Brussels, 02/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 29 July, the EU Council adopted, by written procedure, the regulation on the new trade liberalisation agreement for agricultural products concluded between Hungary and the Community, which took effect on 1 July (see EUROPE of 15 June). In addition to improving the current concessions, the so-called "double profit" agreement provides for the opening of additional quotas of 450,000 tonnes of maize and 120,000 tonnes of wheat for the candidate countries, with a view to total liberalisation of agricultural trade after EU enlargement. The Community, for its part, obtained an increase in its export quotas, at zero duty for fruit and vegetables (melons, potatoes, tomatoes, onions), beef and veal and poultry. Complete and mutual liberalisation is foreseen for sheep meat, malt, molasses and cut flowers. The agreement also provides for elimination by the parties of their export subsidies in several sectors. These new concessions will increase by an additional EUR 700 million the bilateral agricultural trade value subject to the free trade regime.
