Brussels, 31/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - There are many situations in which different parties wish to use the same domain name to promote their personal interests or those of their company on the Internet. In some cases, individuals, who are in no way connected to a name or who do not have any business interests in a name, known as "cybersquatters", register names in bad faith in the hope of being able to make a profit by selling them, at an exorbitant price, to individuals, companies or organisations that do have a link with these names. In order to assess the problem properly and develop appropriate solutions, the European Commission has launched on-line consultation. It will use the findings to elaborate public policy rules for the European Union Internet top level domain, which will carry the suffix ".eu" and will be introduced under the ".eu" Regulation adopted by the European Parliament and the Council in April 2002. In order to collect a wide range of views and to make it as easy as possible for everybody to contribute, the Commission has put the questionnaire on its website at http: //europa.eu.int/yourvoice.
