Brussels, 30/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The resolution to partition Cyprus will, "depend on the elections in Turkey," declared the Negotiator in Chief for the Accession of Cyprus to the EU, George Vassiliou. "If pro-European forces win the elections in Turkey," the negotiator is certain that the line followed by the Turkish Cypriots and Turks "will change". According to Mr Vassiliou, this will allow a solution to the Cyprus problem to be found, which had, he declared, hitherto been blocked, "because the Turks have insisted on the creation of two states". On the other hand, "if the position of Denktash (leader of the Turkish Cypriots) is maintained, the problem will not be resolved". George Vassiliou rejected accusations made by Turkish Prime Minister, Bulent Ecevit, according to which, the EU is aggravating the problem because it is not requesting anything of Greek Cypriots, who will become more demanding as a result (EUROPE 18 July p 6). The Greek negotiator said that he was "absolutely confident" that Member States would respect the accession of Cyprus to the EU even if the island was still divided. The Turkish Parliament is in the middle of debates regarding the holding of elections. After having accepted the idea of elections on 3 November, Bulent Ecevit is now opposed. Parliament is expected to make an announcement in this connection this week.
