Schwerin, 30/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - During the 79th Franco-German summit on Tuesday in Schwerin, President Chirac and Chancellor Schröder mainly stressed the need to give a "new dynamic" to European Security and Defence Policy. During this summit, held two months before Germany's general elections (to which we shall return), Mr Chirac and Mr Schröder decided to set working groups in place to develop common positions not only on security and defence but also on the reform of the European institutions and EU enlargement. On the subject of Franco-German differences over reform of Common Agricultural Policy, Gerhard Schröder commented: "Friendship does not necessarily mean that you always think the same way". In Schwerin, President Chirac, who was accompanied for the first time by Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, insisted on reactivating the Franco-German drive. Foreign Ministers are entrusted with presenting a "powerful political statement" to be adopted on 22 January next, for the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty.
