23/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of the European Parliament's Socialist Group headed by its president, Enrique Baron, has recently visited several Latin American countries. In Chile, MEPs notably met President Lagos. In Argentina, where they had talks with Foreign Minister Carlos Ruckauf, Defence Minister Horacio Jaunarena and Finance Minister Roberto Lavagna, Mr Baron stressed that the Socialist Group was willing to work within the European Parliament in favour of a common EU approach on International Monetary Fund measures for combating the crisis in this country. In Brazil, the delegation met Luis Ignacio Da Silva (known as "Lula"), the President of the Labour Party who is running for Presidency of the Republic, Secretary of State for Human Rights Luis Pinheiro, and Cardinal Hummes.
