Brussels, 23/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - Swiss and EU delegations met up in Zurich on Monday for the eighth round of negotiations in the field of processed agricultural products. Progress was made in solving the main problem - compensation for the difference in prices in the EU and Switzerland for basic agricultural products, which fall into the bracket of processed agricultural products, such as chocolate and biscuits. The solution will involve the EU totally getting rid of customs duties on Swiss processed agricultural products and Switzerland responding in kind by ending subsidies on these exports. On the other side of the trade spectrum, Switzerland will considerably reduce the excise duties on products, which it imports and the EU will completely get rid of export subsidies.
