Union encourages reform in Bolivia

Brussels, 08/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Danish Presidency has issued the following declaration on behalf of the European Union: "The European Union congratulates the Bolivian people and political parties for the peaceful and orderly manner in which the presidential and parliamentary elections were conducted on Sunday 30th of June thus confirming the consolidation and maturity of the democracy in Bolivia. The European Union recognises the positive role played by the National and Departmental Electoral Courts in accordance with the electoral legislation. The European Union reaffirms its commitment to continue to develop the excellent relations with Bolivia through political dialogue, economic collaboration and support to cooperation programmes in order to further develop the democratic process, combat corruption and drugs, reduce poverty and reform the public sector. The European Union looks forward to working with the new government to continue the reform process and the implementation of the PRSP (Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper) and to engage in constructive measures to revitalise the economy and alleviate the social repercussions of the present economic crisis. The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area align themselves with this declaration".
