Strasbourg, 08/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of a resolution on the situation in Zimbabwe during its emergency debate on Thursday, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament calls on African States to adopt a position that is conform to the commitments taken in the context of the NEPAD (new partnership for development in Africa) and greater severity towards Zimbabwe. Libya, for example, must stop providing material support to President Mugabe. "Mugabe's presence at the last summit against hunger in Rome was a disgrace", said British Conservative Charles Tannock. Belgian representative Nelly Maes (Greens-EFA) called on the Commission to change its line of conduct while recognising the EU's lack of power as it has not achieved anything "despite its strong resolutions". The EP now hopes that the General Affairs Council of 22 and 23 July will provide an opportunity to adopt more effective provisions for the implementation of targeted sanctions already decided.
