Brussels, 05/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the Dutch Minister of Agriculture decided to place 29 pig breeding concerns under surviellance after the discovery of MPA (a banned growth hormone in the Community) in pig feed. The European Commission indicated that it had been informed of this incident according to the rapid alarm procedure and pointed out that the Netherlands had to trace where the contaminated products come from, withdraw them from the market and slaughter any animals that may have consumed these substances, as well as carry out tests for checking the level of contamination. In Belgium, 5 breeders have been blocked from importing 5, 500 pigs from Dutch companies suspected of feeding these animals on contaminated feed. Germany has also imported 2,200 pigs from the Netherlands and 35 tons of contaminated feed, indicated the German Minister of Agriculture.
