Madrid Summit tackles American protectionist traits - Latin American countries call for EU to open markets

Madrid, 21/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - During the EU/Latin America/Caribbean summit on 17 May in Madrid (see EUROPE of 18 May, p.4), the participants condemned American unilateralism with a one voice, though the Latin Americans also called upon the EU to open its markets more rapidly.

We have undertaken to fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, and we called for free trade against protectionism, underlined, Jose Maria Aznar, following the meeting. What we need, is multilateralism that...
