03/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday during his visit to China, European Commissioner Chris Patten said after his meeting with President Jiang Zemin that both sides recognised "that the success of our relationship is just too important for us to allow our occasional disagreements to destroy what we are committed to trying to do together". One of the disagreements has arisen from the EU's embargo on Chinese shrimp, chicken and meat for safety reasons, that some Member States are planning to destroy. Chinese trade minister Shi Guangsheng said "I have solemnly raised this issue to Chris Patten that they have no right to destroy it as these products did not enter the customs and still belong to Chinese enterprises", calling the bans "unscientific and unfair".
