Brussels, 08/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The president of the Committee of Agricultural Organisations in the EU (COPA), Gerhard Sonnleitner, and the president of the General Committee of the Agricultural Cooperatives in the EEC (COGECA), Marcus Borgström, presented to the press in Brussels, on Friday, their strategy document on the future of the European agricultural sector. They declared that farmers were willing to assume their responsibilities more than in the past and to do more to achieve sustainable agriculture, animal welfare, respect for the environment, and product traceability), but only on condition that these efforts are financed by aid to income. The document entitled "European model: a sustainable agriculture for all Europeans" does not at any time mention the problem or the challenge of enlargement. Not a word is there, either, on the subject of principles, although already taken on board by some Member States (like France and Germany), sliding scales or the modulation of direct aid. Furthermore, these organisations recommend status quo regarding the mid-term revision of CAP: COPA and COGECA, states the document, expect that, over the period until 2006, the European authorities will respect decisions adopted at the Berlin Summit, and that the Agenda 2000 will not be amended until then.
