European Parliament takes part in "E-parliament"

Strasbourg, 07/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of the Swedish Liberal Cecilia Malmstrom and other Euro-MPs from all the main political groups, the European Parliament is to take part in the initiative aimed at launching a "digital parliament", the "E-parliament, that Earth Action is in the process of setting up throughout the world. All the 25,000 democratically elected parliamentarians in the world are invited to participate in this internet parliament, states a press release. And Cecilia Malmstrom, who has invited colleagues to join the initiative (together with Erika Mann, Pia Noora Kauppi, Heidi Hautala, Jens-Peter Bonde and Graham Watson), comments: the possibility offered to parliamentarians from throughout the world to discuss among each other "on equal terms can lead to a new global level of democracy, in particular in countries that recently held their first free elections". The new parliament, which will be able to discuss with citizens problems of a world dimension like terrorism, AIDS and the rights of children, will be able to vote on proposals, the press release points out.
