Brussels, 28/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Josep Piqué announced in a press statement on Monday evening that the General Affairs Council would examine the "very specific report of Commissioner Verheugen" on the different possibilities of carrying out the objectives of the Council, notably, to conclude negotiations by the end of 2002. The conclusions outline that the Council of Seville would make an initial assessment of the implementation of the acquis by the candidate countries on the basis of the Action Plan to be set up by the Commission. The Presidency also stressed that it intended to examine all the chapters in negotiations with Bulgaria and try and do the same with Romania, wherever the necessary information was available. Negotiation conferences at deputy level will be organised on 21 and 22 March and then on 19-22 April. A Ministerial level conference will be held on 10-11 June. Previously, Heads of State and governments of candidate countries, as well as their Foreign Affairs and Economy Ministers would have participated on 15 March at the European Summit of Barcelona.
