Temporary committee to assess EU policy on foot and mouth

Brussels, 11/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Next Wednesday, the Parliament is expected to approve the creation of a temporary committee on the foot and mouth disease. It will organise hearings on this crisis with, in particular, representatives of the Commission and of the governments. It will report in one year. The text on which the MEPs are to give their views shows that the temporary committee will be responsible for: - assessing EU policy and the control of meat imports from third countries in the context of the epidemic; - analysing the management of outbreaks of the disease; - analysing the total impact on Community funds of the foot and mouth epidemic so far; - and making "proposals to look into vaccination policy in particular and for political and legislative initiatives, with regard to the prevention and fighting of diseases in the agricultural sector in general".
