Brussels, 11/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has given its approval of the acquisition by the Finnish company Fortum Oyj of exclusive control of Birka Energi AB, a Swedish joint venture operating in the electricity sector, and jointly owned by the town of Stockholm and Fortum. Operating in the northern region, Fortum produces, sells and distributes electricity, district heating and industrial heat and steam as well as oil and gas. The company plans to acquire sole control of the electricity business of Birka Energi AB by buying up the stake held by the city of Stockholm. The Commission considers the operation will not entail major consequences as far as competition is concerned on the markets in question.
