Nice, 03/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 31 December in Nice, the President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, declared that the second European millennium would begin with the ambitious project of the Euro in meeting the challenges of globalisation. Ms Fontaine also declared that the Euro would seal the spirit and consciousness of a single European citizenship added to but not weakening that of national citizenship. Ms Fontaine had been keen to experience this historic moment in Nice. She also expressed a wish that nobody should feel left out of this sharing of prosperity and that the Europeans had been able to build on the ruins of a "fratricidal war" while the rest of the world continued to tear itself apart. President Fontaine was convinced that all Member States would soon join the twelve members of the single currency and share in the common good of half a billion Europeans.
