Brussels, 07/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Negotiations have concluded over the EU/Algeria Association Agreement, which will be initialled in Brussels on 19 December during a working visit by President Bouteflika to the European Commission. It is a similar type of agreement as those signed with other Maghreb countries and includes the obligation for Algeria to open up its market to EU industrial products in twelve years time. The reciprocal access schemes for agricultural products are treated separately and will be reassessed once they have been in application for five years. The defining characteristic of the Agreement is the fact that the judicial and social co-operation section has been fleshed out with regard to freedom of movement, readmission and fighting organised crime and terrorism. The subject will also be covered in the Preamble, reflecting Algeria's desire for closer cooperation in this area.
