Brussels, 06/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission banned util the end of the year exports of live pigs and pig sperm, ovule and embryo from the autonomous community of Catalonia (Spain), following the discovery of a new outbreak of classic swine fever, that appeared two weeks following the expiry of the last restrictive measures that affected the country for over six months. The Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC) will discuss the situation at its meeting of 18-19 December 2001.
The Commission was informed of the existence of an outbreak in a farm of the disctrict (Comarca) of Osama (Barcelona). The Spanish authorities immediately implemented the measures required by the 23 October directive: 1 - ringfencing a protection area of a radius of 3 km and a monitoring radius of 10 km; - checking all farms in the two areas; - precise control of the movements of live animals in the previous two weeks.
