Luxembourg, 05/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Advocate General Leendert Geelhoed proposes that the European Court of Justice sentence France for not having designated the Gulf of the Seine (Normandy) as being water polluted by nitrogen. The European Commission has taken France to Court. It considers the method used by the French authorities for designating water polluted by nitrogen or of threatening to be. The Commission considers this method not to comply with the directive on nitrates. This case comes within a series of actions taken by the European Commission which has already had France sentenced (see EUROPE of 17 March), as it considered that the French Government had done nothing for twenty years to combat pollution by nitrates in the neighbouring region, Brittany.
