10/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner Michel Barnier presented the European Parliament's Regional Policy Committee on Tuesday with an assessment of the use, as at 30 September, of the credits available this year for regional policy. Most of the credits have been committed for Objectives 1 (99.5%) and 2 (96.5%), although many payments still have to be made, the launch of other structural actions has been held up. The Commissioner felt that the situation regarding the Cohesion Funds was "of concern", but signalled that the backlog for the INTERREG and URBAN initiatives would be dealt with. EUROPE will come back to this tomorrow.
