Graham Watson calls for genuine EP consultation on terrorism package

Strasbourg, 04/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the EP committee on public rights, Graham Watson, felt that the adoption of the package of anti-terrorist measures must not go ahead without genuine consultation of MEPs who, he feels, should also have access to reports on the implementation of the measures. He called on the EP's Conference of Presidents to call for a meeting of the Inter-institutional Committee on access to documents before the end of November to help the EP adapt its security regulations and, more importantly, to allow it to access information which it needs to have to be able to reasonably participate in the Union's legislative process, he explained in a letter to the EP President. While supporting the strengthening of police and judicial co-operation, Mr Watson lambasts the fact that in the current circumstances, the EP continues to not have access to information on the implementation of legislative measures and will again be consulted on texts which have not been submitted to Parliament because they are classified as "confidential". He added that the EP would also have some responsibility for the functioning of Europol, being consulted about staff pay, but was being kept away from the work programme and its results.
