Brussels, 24/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - In answer to questions put to her during a press conference on the sidelines of the summit in Brussels, on the subject of possibly standing for the presidency of the future Convention to prepare the EU's new institutional reform, Nicole Fontaine stressed that, from 1 January 2002, she will no longer be President of the European Parliament and will be no more than an MEP. She said that the presidency would be held by a personality of great stature, as was the case when President Herzog presided the Convention that drew up the Charter of Fundamental Rights. "I am not a candidate", she added, although she did thank the journalist who had put the question for the honour he had done her by thinking that she could do the job.
