ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) broadcasting

The UK's leading cable operator, NTL, is planning to sell off its broadcasting division in order to cut its debts. According to the Financial Times, three bids have been received, one from FRANCE TELECOM, NTL's biggest shareholder (with a 24% stake). Owner of towers and pylons, NTL broadcasts ITV, CHANNEL 4 and CHANNEL 5 programmes in the UK and various private radio stations. NTL is hoping to raise between £1.2 and 1.6 billion from the sale.
