The American paper groups WESTVACO and MEAD CORPORATION announced their merger "among equals" on Wednesday in a transaction carried out through a share swap estimated at $3 billion. The new group, MEAD-WESTVACO CORPORATION will have an annual turnover of some $8 bn. The two paper manufacturers plan to reach synergies of at least $325 bn two years after the merger.
