European Parliament to gradually resume its activities from Monday on

Brussels, 24/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - Next week will be marked by the resumption of parliamentary activity with the first meetings of the committees and political groups in the context of preparation for the European Parliament plenary session to be held in Strasbourg from 3 to 6 September.

The Committee on Citizens' Rights and Freedoms will, on Monday 27 August, receive Europol Director Jürgen Storbeck. On Tuesday, it is expected to adopt the report on minimum standards for the procedure for granting or withdrawing refugee status. It will also hold an exchange of views on violence on the fringe of international meetings. On Monday, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will hear experts on inflationary pressure linked to the changeover to single currency.

On Tuesday, an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs is expected to tackle the situation in the Middle East and in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The possible participation of CFSP High Representative Javier Solana, Commissioner Chris Patten, Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel and German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has yet to be confirmed. The meeting should also lead to the adoption of a proposal of resolution that will serve as a framework for the discussion and vote to be held the following week on all interim reports relating to applicant countries.
