(eu) euenlargement/austria

06/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with the weekly Format, the Minister-President of Carinthia, Jorg Haider (FPO) again demanded the holding of a referendum on EU enlargement, despite rejection of this demand by Foreign Minister Benita-Ferrero Waldner and the Head of Government Wolfgang Schuessel ("not as long as I'm Chancellor", he said). Following the Austrian elections in 2003, Mr. Schuessel "will let himself be more easily convinced, if he wants to become Chancellor again", said Haider, for whom a central topic in the formation of a new coalition in Vienna will be such a referendum. According to him, the Austrians will have to be asked if they are "in favour of enlargement being an added burden on Austria's net contribution to the EU budget".
