14/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the end of his informal dinner in Paris on Friday with Jacques Chirac and Lionel Jospin (see EUROPE of 12 May, p. 5), Chancellor Schroeder said that, at the Gothenburg Summit, there would be a common position by France and Germany on all subjects. French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, for his part, stated that "our approaches will be the same, even though we know that each country may have their own problems (…). The debate on the future of Europe has just begun. We agree on the short term and we shall debate the long-term freely". Asked about Schroeder's ideas on the future of Europe, President Chirac replied that "there is no stance of Chancellor Schroeder (…) There is a stance of the German Social-Democrat Party, and we are prepared to discuss it". Nothing occurs within the SPD "without full agreement of its Chairman", commented Gerhard Schroeder, who chairs the Party.
