Brussels, 25/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner Chris Patten signed financing agreements on Wednesday for two projects in Yemen, for a total of EUR 8.5 million, shared out as follows:
- EUR 6 million for the restructuring of Aden Governorate Water and Sanitation Corporation. The aim is to improve drinking water supplies and sewerage systems, thereby improving health conditions. The project is carried out in the context of the study launched in 1995 by the Ministry for Electricity and Water, which provided for these systems to be decentralised in order to increase efficiency.
- EUR 2.5 million for civil aviation, a sector that is suffering from under-investment. Above all, it would be a matter of repairing or replacing communication and navigation equipment in the main airports, helping to maintain equipment in conformity with international standards, and launching a staff training programme for the civil aviation authority in Yemen.
We recall that the EC-Yemen Cooperation Agreement of 25 November 1997 provided for EU financing of EUR 38 million for the year 2000.
