10/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The British Liberal Democrat MEP Andrew Duff has welcomed a decision by the UK government to ensure "equal treatment of all EU citizens in the matter of paying fixed penalties for minor driving offences". He explained in a press release that in the past, non-British EU citizens have been unable to pay the fixed penalties imposed on British nationals and have had to appear in court at their own cost. Following a complaint from a Dutch constituent of Andrew Duff, the European Citizens Action Service (ECAS) and then the European Commission, the British government decided that all EU citizens should pay fixed fines. Andrew Duff believes the case shows "how resistant" British bureaucrats can be to meeting "their European obligations".
