Towards suspension of Ukraine?

Strasbourg, 09/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - By unanimously adopting, the report by Renate Wohlwend (EPP, Liechtenstein) and Hannes Severinsen (Liberal, Danish), the follow-up commission for the Council of Europe parliamentary Assembly noted that, despite warnings the Ukraine has still not respected the undertakings made during its accession to the Council of Europe. It deplores, in particular, the murders of journalists, repeated attacks and continuous intimidation against journalists, MPs and political opponents, as well as abuses of power with regards to freedom of expression and freedom of association. It thus favours the suspension of Ukraine; highest sanction decide by the Committee of Minister, which makes the State concerned loose all its rights for representation within the bodies of the Council of Europe. It has never been applied in 51 years. The report will be examined by the Assembly on 24 April.
