13/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament plenary session adopted the reports by Wiebenga, Nassauer, Frahm and Deprez on immigration and asylum policy (see summaries in yesterday's EUROPE, pp.14/15 especially). It challenges the fragmented approach arising from many initiatives taken by the Member States and awaits proposals from the European Commission on a real policy for immigration and asylum and rejects Member State initiatives. The EP also adopted the reports by Mr Hatzidakis on safety in the transport of radioactive material and of Mr Schwaiger on the recommendations of the EP to the European Commission for the next round of multilateral trade negotiations in the context of the WTO. EUROPE will come back to this.
