12/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - On his second and last day of a trip to Poland, European Commission President Romano Prodi expressed his wish on Friday that Poland join the EU in the first wave of accessions, so that Polish citizens may participate in the European elections of 2004. If the Commission's "road map" is respected, negotiations with Poland (and other candidate countries) should be over by end-2002, said Prodi, in a speech at the Catholic University of Lublin. "I'd like as many candidates as possible to join during this Commission's term in office. I would be very happy to see the Polish people vote - and propose candidates - at the European elections of 2004", he declared.
