Four reports to assess Lisbon follow-up on table of Heads of Government - New objectives

Brussels, 12/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - In view of the Stockholm Summit, the European Commission adopted four assessment reports, in Strasbourg on 13 March, on progress achieved since Lisbon in the areas of the information society, and bio-technologies. These documents presented by Mr. Liikanen, Commissioner responsible for the information society, also comprise guidelines on which the Heads of State or Governments will have to decide on 23 and 24 March. Three of them come within the "e-Europe - an information society for all" initiative. The first assesses progress made in Internet access and to multimedia resources in education and sets new objectives for their learning. The second turns to advances made in matters of electronic commerce and comprises a programme called "Go Digital", in view of facilitating SME transfer to the digital mode. The third assess the situation regarding mobile telephony, especially developments in the third generation portables and European advances in this field. Finally, the last broaches the question of bio-technologies, notably in relation to employment.
