Brussels, 09/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative for the common foreign and security policy, Javier Solana will be on a visit to Colombia on Monday, where he will meet President Andres Pastrana, and Foreign Minister Fernandez Soto. He should assure the President of the "European Union's support for the peace process", says a press release from the High Representative. The EU is committed to backing the social aspects, but not the military aspects of "Plan Colombia", financed to the tune of $1.3 billion by the United States (see EUROPE of 28 October, p.15). The European Parliament has called on the EU to maintain this "clean strategy" by placing emphasis on social issues (see EUROPE of 3 February, p.5). Solana's visit also comes in the context of preparing the conference of the support group for the peace process, to be held in Brussels on 30 April. The Commission has already undertaken to provide aid worth 105 million euro to the process. Then, Solana will move on to Mexico.
