Brussels, 28/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the General Affairs Council welcomed the Commission communication on the EU and Kaliningrad (see EUROPE of 18 January, p.10). It sees it as a good basis for developing further EU cooperation with Russia and neighbouring countries, in order to specify problems related to the Kaliningrad region, regarding the movement of goods and people, energy supplies, fisheries, economic development, governance, democracy and the rule of law, as well as the environment and health. The Council instructed its Working Party on Central Europe to study the communication and identify the possibilities for cooperation with Poland and Lithuania with a view to the meeting of the Cooperation Council with Russia to be held on 10 April.
