Brussels, 28/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Questioned about the resolution the European Parliament recently adopted on religious freedom in China (see EUROPE of 17 February, p.5), a spokesman for the Embassy of the People's Republic of China said that Parliament had "distorted facts" and "wantonly slandered" China, which therefore expresses its "strong dissatisfaction". The Chinese Constitution guarantees citizens religious freedom and, thanks to the government's efforts at "various levels", "religious activities all over China, including Tibet are gong normally", said the spokesman. As for the ban on Falun Gong, he declared that it was a question of a "cult that goes against humanities, society ad science", and that it was banned "in accordance with law, which is to safeguard citizens' fundamental religious freedom and protect human rights."
