Podgorica, 12/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Union reaffirmed, on 9 February in Podgorica, its "clear preference for a genuinely reformed Federal Republic of Yugoslavia," indicated a press release from the Swedish Presidency concerning the visit undertaken by the EU Troika at political Directors level, Presided over by Olof Petersson. The delegation, which met in particular the President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic and the Prime Minister Filip Vujanovic, "welcomes and encourages" the talks between the federal authorities and the governments of Serbia and Montenegro, added the press release. Mr Petersson also asserted: "We want to see an open and democratic process leading to a new constitutional arrangement acceptable to all parties. We expect Belgrade and Podgorica to negotiate in good faith and trust that the parties will ensure the democratic legitimacy of the outcome. No unilateral action should be taken which could jeopardise this process. Any renegotiation of the federal relationship must take into account the internal stability of the FRY and the regional stability of South Eastern Europe. We further expert the media in Montenegro and Serbia to cover the issue fully and fairly, and to ensure that the full rang of views in this important debate is heard by the citizens of Montenegro and Serbia. It is their future which is at stake, and they are entitled to be fully informed of the implications."
