Rutelli, candidate for Italian Council Presidency, discusses main European issues with Prodi

Brussels, 31/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - Francesco Rutelli MEP, member of Democratici, met Commission President Romano Prodi and Commissioners de Palacio, Kinnock, Monti, Vitorino, Barnier and Byrne in Brussels. With President Prodi, Mr. Rufetti told the press, we discussed the reform of the European Commission, European security and defence policy, food safety (Rutelli recalled that Parma was candidate to host the future European Food Authority), problems of immigration and asylum, economic reform, education, research and the environment. On this last topic, Mr. Rutelli announced that, Italy this year exercising the presidency of the G-8, his government (the elections are scheduled in principle for 22 April: Ed.) would take an initiative aimed at rekindling the negotiations that failed in The Hague on combating greenhouse gases. The Italian Minister for the Environment has planned a meeting, in Trieste in March, with his counterparts from the G-8 Group, and in particular with the new American Minister, he pointed out. Rutelli, who spoke of this plan with the Commissioner for the Environment, Ms. Wallstrom, said that this idea had also received a warm welcome on the part of Tony Blair, whom he had met in London on Tuesday.
