The Italian establishments UNICREDITO and BANCA INTESA are unofficially said to be in talks over a merger. Such a move would create a new heavyweight in Europe, with a stock market capitalisation of 108,000 bn lira, assets of 915,000 bn lira and 7,000 branches.
