Six French MEPs leave Europe of Nations Group

Strasbourg, 17/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - Six French nationalist MEPs close to Philippe de Villiers have announced their decision to leave the Group of the Union for a Europe of Nations (UEN) that thus goes from 30 to 24 members. This does place the Group's existence into question, but these same MEPs have also said that they would be proposing to the members of the UEN Group setting up a new group from which Mr. Pasqua and those close to him would be excluded. In a press release, they justify their decision by "new information in their possession", without however saying what. This information is said to be linked to the affair of the trafficking of weapons to Angola in which Charles Pasqua's former co-member, Mr. de Villiers, accused the former of being involved, and for which Jean-Christophe Mitterand has been questioned. They say that, given this new information, it is no longer possible for them to remain in the UEN Group as long as Mr. Pasqua remains its president. These six MEPs are: Elizabeth Montfort, Nicole Thomas-Mauro, Georges Berthu, Thierry de La Perriere, Dominique Souchet and Alexandre Varaut.
