RWE, Germany's number one in the energy sector, has sold its chemicals subsidiary CONDEA (2.6 bn euro turnover for the 1999/2000 financial year, with a workforce of 4,600 and subsidiaries in Germany, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands and China) to the South African petrochemicals group SASOL (annual turnover of some 4 bn euro, with a staff of 25,000) for some 1.3 bn euro.
