Solana welcomes latest developments towards resolving crisis

Brussels, 23/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative Javier Solana commented on the latest developments in Lima (destitution of President Fujimori, for "permanent moral incapacity", by the Congress which has appointed its president, Valentin Paniagua, as acting president of the Republic) considering that Peru has "made a very important step forward towards resolving a political crisis" that was growing worse. "I am certain that Peru will be able to overcome the transitional stage until the elections on 8 April of next year without any mishaps, and fully re-establish democratic normalcy, with the help of all political forces", says Mr Solana. He adds: "Europe has followed the Peruvian crisis closely, continually supporting the respect of the rule of law and the efforts of the organisation of the American States in order to be able, through dialogue, to adopt the political and institutional reforms needed to ensure that an authentically democratic system functions as it should". Mr Solana assures the acting president, Valentin Paniagua, and Prime Minister designate Javier Perez de Cuellar that they have the EU's full support.
