SUMITOMO CHEMICAL and MITSUI CHEMICALS, respectively number two and number three on the Japanese chemicals market, want to merge their activities end-2003 to form the largest Japanese group in the sector and the world's number five so as to improve their competitiveness in relation to American and European groups. The two partners expect sales of 3000 bn yen for the fiscal year 2006-2007.
