23/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - Despite the dispute between Greece and Turkey during the NATO "Destined Glory 2000" manoeuvres and which led Greece to pull out of them on Sunday, three days before their end, Athens and Ankara must continue their policy of rapprochement "step by step", to as to back "Turkey's European orrientation" said Greek Foreign minister George Papandreou, visiting Atlanta (United States), the Greek press agency ANA reports. Greece withdrew its forces having (in vein) asked for the manoeuvres to be halted as, according to Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatszopoulos, Turkish fighters approached Greek planes in the airspace over the Greek islands of Limnos and Icaria, in the Aegean. Turkey replied that Greece had violated the rules agreed by the Alliance regarding air corridors to use during the manoeuvres, and had taken advantage of the exercise to "promote its illegal demands in the Aegean".
