More debates next week concerning cloning, transfer of football players and AIDS

Brussels, 01/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament political groups only slightly changed the programme of the plenary session to open on Monday in Strasbourg (see agenda in EUROPE of 30 August, p.7). On Tuesday, a debate concerning AIDS, following the Durban conference, was added to the agenda at the request of the GUE/NGL group. It will be held on the basis of a declaration from the Commission and Council. The debate is introduced just before the declaration by French Minister Nicole Pery on the subject of the creation of an Observatory on Industrial Change. On Wednesday, Commissioner Frits Bolkestein will make a statement on human cloning to be followed by a debate and the vote on a resolution that could open the road to the constitution of a temporary committee on questions relating to bio-ethics. Finally, on Thursday, the joint discussion on sport, that was already to include a declaration by Marie-Georges Buffet on behalf of the Council on the fight against doping and on the social function of sport as well as the Zabell and Mennea reports, is completed by a Commission statement on the system for transfers of football players, to be presented by Viviane Reding (see following pages for sport-related questions).
