11/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - Toyota called on a small number of its British suppliers to invoice their new services in Euros, so as to "reduce costs there where it is possible" (by carrying out transactions in Euro, the Japanese manufacturers is putting the burden of exchange - appreciation of the Pound compared to the Euro - onto the shoulders of the British sub-contractors). The British Conservatives, through John Redwood, quoted by the "Guardian" accuses the government of getting Toyota to do "its dirty work" for it by stepping up pressure for accession to the Euro. Trying to minimise the impact of this decision, the British Minister for Trade and Industry reminded that it had always encouraged SMEs to use the Euro when it is a way of winning market share.
