GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/illegal immigration

25/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Italian government is calling for a Community action against the "Mafia" that organise illegal immigration, announced the Minister for Finance Ottaviano del Turco. After the latest dramatic incidents (that lead to the death of two "Guardia di Finanza" agents), the Minister announced that Italy cannot fight alone against "the trade in human beings". Italy represents Europe's border in the face of the places of origin of most illegal immigration (Albania, Kosovo, turkey, Tunisia, etc.), and a common action is necessary to fight the various criminal organisations linked between each other. According to the Minister, the Sicilian, Neapolitan and Calabraise Mafia work in close cooperation with criminal organisation in Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The opposition is calling for Italy to suspend all aid to Albanians long as the authorities do not collaborate in the fight against this organised crime.
