According to Mr. Chirac a European Constitution is possible in two years

Hanover, 26/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - "My aim, that to which I am resolute, is, thanks to the Franco-German understanding and friendship, to progress and pursue this great European adventure," said the French President Jacques Chirac, during an interview given on Sunday evening on German television (ZDF) with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Kicking off the two day State visit Mr. Chirac is making in Germany, this meeting enabled the two men to demonstrate a complete convergence of views on all issues related to institutional reform, including the weighting of votes in the Council. "What is important, is policy and not mathematics," said Mr. Schroeder when asserting that the weighting of votes in relation to the demographic weight of the countries, more favourable to Germany, is not an issue that divided the two parties. "Either way, it would not be a problem between us," added Mr. Chirac. With regard to the speech by Joschka Fischer, Jacques Chirac felt that the "United States of Europe" formula gives "a confused image, which is not a good image." "In reality it is not the United States of Europe that are in question, it is a United Europe of States," said the French President, on why the EU could have its own constitution within two years. "In my opinion, something that can be quickly resolved because it is necessary," said Mr. Chirac for whom it is a case of months rather than years. Also adding: "Maybe one or two years."
